I have solid lines running across my screen!

Hey All,

I have a late 2010 Macbook Air 1.4ghz with an odd problem. I have horizontal lines running across the screen. Mostly grey and white with the occasional black. to the point that i can not see the screen.

Note to consider. I bought this unit without a SSD and I am between installing a SSD, which I will do later today.

But several times, I have gotten some response from the screen after reset the PRAM several times in a row. Once, getting a pulldown menu to select wireless connections; once getting a flashing folder (meaning no startup disk found) and after holding down the command-r sequence to get the recovery folder, getting a voice response.

Help, don't want to return the unit or replace the logic board. (read difficult).

Thanks

Michael

Could be several possible causes... connect to an external monitor if you see the same lines its the GPU/VGC and only a logic board replace would fix this.

If you see a normal display on the external you know the GPU/VGC is ok and you have an internal display problem.

More history of the unit would be useful... did it suffer a liquid spill... is there corrosion/ or burned/swollen components on the board?

Don't overdue resetting PRAM it's a diagnostic tool, not a normal task - you can over due it and corrupt RAM. (Bad RAM is another possible source of your issue).

Resetting PRAM is usually over prescribed and rarely fixes most issues it is free and an easy way of possibly fixing some issues. So, it is definitely worth a shot. Continued application of that "medicine" will not fix anything it didn't fix the first go round.

Basically, resetting defaults cleans out some stored settings on your machine. Cleaning out these settings can sometimes fix minor issues with your unit. Some of these settings include display refresh rate, system volume, DVD region, kernel panic information, etc.

So what you're doing is "forcing the EFI to 'forget' it's already determined there's a problem with the display chain, or, you may be flexing a cable in the case that does/doesn't short out depending on whether the problem is present or absent.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.
