Why does my iMac heat up and frezes

After a few hours of use my Imac suddenly frezes. I have installed "Fan Control" and turned to max speed.

This helps, but it can still heat up after long use.

What can I do?

Open the back and blow out the dust. Replace the Thermal Paste on the CPU (a very difficult DIY project - not the best job for a beginner to tackle).

FWIW running your fan manually at max is not a good practice. Should you lose a sensor or fan the System default is to run all fans at Max (you have 3 Fans) this would signal a critical part failure to you ear. By running your CPU Fan a Max continually you will shorten it's life, and sacrifice the "notice" of High Fan Speed - since it's running full-out all the time.

Your freezing might not even be caused by overheat but could be a full HD, a Failing HD or Video Card Issues.

I have to agree with MacHead any app that over-rides the cooling system within the system only makes things worse!

What to do?

I would start by using a better diagnostics. How about downloading this: Temperature Gauge Pro it will be able to give you a much better view on what the systems heat sensors are seeing and what the Fan units are doing. Post a screen shot for us to see.

The next thing I would do is create a bootable USB thumb drive (or HD) with a fresh copy of the OS you are using. Then alter the boot up to boot up under it (don't forget to install Temperature Gauge Pro on to it as well). Do the fans still run hard? If they do it's likely a hardware issue which could be a bad HD. Did you upgrade the HD? Often I see this issue with the '11 model when the wrong HD was used (wrong SATA I/O speed and/or does not support the new Apple SMART services).
