Is it possible to replace usb ports that I think are short-circuited.

Ok, so i had a brainless moment... I have a lot of peripherals that i use with my mac for music production, most of which i run through a powered usb hub. I went to hook it all back up after my move. I plugged the usb hub via usb to my mac, then i plugged the power source into the hub. The problem is, i used the wrong power supply!!! I accidentally got the one for my dj controller mixed up with the one for the hub. So i un-intentionally put 12v straight into it! Doh! My mac instantly did a hard reset, and upon reboot everything seems to be working except for the two usb ports. Sd card fine, keyboard fine, thunderbolt fine, but none of my devices register through the usb. Is this a fatal mistake? Or is it something that can be fixed?

you do want to open up your MBP and take a look around. There are a few resistors that may have taken a bit of a hit, as well as your SATA controller. I take it that none of your USB ports are working?

No usb connection at all.

Ya... Neither usb working. And i said it had thunderbolt but its just a mini display port. Its a 2009 macbook pro.

Did you check to see if any of the components around the USB ports are burned or missing:-)

With most new motherboards, onboard USB power supply (the one you damaged, power is separate from USB data interface) are indirectly connected to the hub, usually in series with a resettable PTC fuse, depending on onboard voltage regulator, 12v in parallel with 5v might clamp at the regulator and drop resistance which increases load on the fuse enough to cutoff, tho not continuously as this type of fuse resets when under minimum current threshold which may have triggered many times and left damage in the end.( would have still worked if the process was done in short time)

What you can do to determine and workaround the issue:

-Get a USB Hub, a 5v phone charger, and a male to male USB cable.

-Plug the male side USB hub to the dead port.

-Plug the male-male USB cable end to the phone charger, the other end to the USB hub.

-Plug a flashdrive to test, if it work then the logic board needs repair. (Usually not complex and not worth to replace the entire board as it's relatively simple procedure in most repair shops)

Those USB ports are built into the logic board and you may have fried them ;-(

hello

and when only one USB port works, how do you determine the problem from the other USB port?

Thx
