I purchased a 1 TB SSD hybrid hard drive from this website, but when I tried to install it in my 2008 MacBook Penryn model, it did not register the drive and gave me a flashing "?" folder. Could it be that this hard drive is not compatible with laptop? The connection looks different than that of my old hard drive.

New drives are not formatted nor did it have an OS installed so the reaction of the system blinking a question mark is correct.
You will need one of these options to prepare your new SSHD drive.
You will also need an Internet connection (hopefully fast) so you can download the needed updates and if you desire (and your system is able) upgrade the OS to the latest i.e. Mavericks.

I tried booting up again with my old working drive in an enclosure. This time instead of a light blue screen with flashing question mark, I got just a light blue screen with no markings. I thought maybe it was just slow, so I left it for several hours (overnight) but no progression. I would appreciate advice of what try next at this point! Thanks in advance.
Review this Apple TN: Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs. Try starting up your system again this time press the Option key during startup to get to the Startup manager to allow you to select your old drive as the boot disk. Are you able to get it to boot up then?

Seagate SSHD is what you want.
