I have some keys that are sticking, how can I clean them?

Coffe with sugar was spilled on the lower right keys - shift keys, arrow keys and option key.

They stick and crunch when pressed.

Is there a way to clean the keyboard?

You'll need some supplies:

  • A bottle of distilled water (not tap water!)
  • A bottle of Isopropyl alcohol (85% or better)
  • Cotton swabs (Q-Tips)
  • A can of can'ed air
  • Small paint brush

Follow this YouTube vid on popping off the key caps: How to remove and clean Macbook Pro keyboard keys.

But before you use anything wet try wiping down the keyboard area with the brush to loosen any grains of sugar. Then using the can'ed air using small short blast of air to blow the crud out. Then using a moist (not wet!) Q-Tip wipe down the areas that are sticky. You may need to do a few passes. Once you have finished go over the areas again with a moist Q-Tip with Isopropyl alcohol to help drying out the water and any oil deposits.

Thank you. Followed the YouTube video - He makes it look easy though it was tricky for me. The shift key is still kind of iffy.

Happy to hear you managed to get most of the keys cleaned. You may need to check the wire springs position on the shift key.
