Computer unresponsive after thermal compound replacement.
Hi there. I just concluded replacing the thermal compound on the unit and now it won't respond at all to the press of the power button. The battery indicator shows 3/4 power, the battery is connected to the motherboard, but no response whatsoever.
I also replaced the hard drive with a new, unformatted hard drive due to the failure of the last. To my knowledge it should be at least giving me a boot and an apple logo.
I followed the iFixit directions to the T, using the extremely helpful Magnetic Project mat and my precision screwdriver set.
Tried unplugging battery cable and holding down power button to completely drain of power. Unsuccessful. It was doing similar things a few weeks back when it was getting really hot and the hard drive failed (Seagate SSHD 500 GB).
Tried the following procedure to reset SMC, and was unsuccessful: On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
• Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Thanks,
Andrew

Have you tried just unplugging the HD to see if the system was able to start then?

Yup. Tried the old HD and no HD. Neither method provides any response from the status light at the front.
