Grey screen and no sound

Hi,

A neighbour's son got his iPhone 4 trying to repair the earphone jack of his iPhone with a screwdriver. Something he did made the display go grey. When I tried to switch it on, I can see it starts, but the screen remains white grey, after a while if I tap the screen, there is some response, but since it is still the grey white screen I cannot see anything. There is no sound of start click or anything else. I have opened the casing to see if anything damaged but apart from the sign of the kid's screwdriver having gone through the earphone jack and damaged it, I do not see any other signs. I tried to hard reset with the home and power button, but no change. Could someone tell me, what could be damaged and cause this symptom?

Your choices are LCD problem or board problem.

Start with LCD first. Replace and see what happens.

You can text the new screen by just plugging g it into its sockets on the logic board without having to take the whole phone apart.

Thanks Jessa,

I think you're right, though I will try and see if I can get a logic board (if the screwdriver did the damage then it was not likely to have touched the lcd or the connectors)

Thank you

Absolutely right Jessa.... I did not remove the earphone jack totally, last time I dismantled the phone, and I just did that now and found the screwdriver had gone through the earphone jack and damaged the LCD... THANKS

Well i dropped my phone about a month ago and the screen did the same as you are describing. This might be crazy but try giving it a good whack on the back part. But it cant be that easy. It has to be hard enough to get the led wiring back into its place. Sorry if this isn't what you're looking for

Thanks Skarl, though I disassembled and reassembled the phone to make sure all the contacts were ok. If a whack could cure it then it would be a loose connection somewhere and I think a reassembly would have cured it, But I'll give it a whack anyway to see if I missed anything.
