Bottom RAM module disappears after moving computer?

I've had two (Crucial) 4GB memory modules in this system since it was new (2008) and never had a problem with them. Now, however, every time I put the computer to sleep and take it to work in my bag, it wakes up to the boot screen.

If I look at the System Information, it will report a different amount of RAM each time (one or two sticks worth). I tried swapping the sticks and using only one stick in alternating slots and it seems that the bottom slot (toward the main board) is loose or otherwise losing connection to the RAM module.

If I leave the bottom slot empty, the system works flawlessly, but I really need all 8GB for my work. Does anyone know a fix for this problem that doesn't involving replacing the main board?

After a little searching, I found this post which almost identically describes my problem.

I do a lot of processing with my system and it does get crazy hot during the process. Last year, the hinge clutch cover was riddled with cracks (from heat? I've never dropped it.) and had to be replaced. I guess these systems weren't designed to actually be used to their full capacity.

Anyway, I tried loosening the RAM holder screws as described and it didn't work. I'll loosen them a little more and see if that does the trick. It's a shame that it can't handle the heat that it generates to the extent that the logic board gets warped. I would hope that it would at least throttle down the CPU before it let itself become damaged!

Were they correctly installed by you, or installed factory? I have had experience in the past that if they are incorrectly installed they may have damaged the RAM slot itself rendering the slot faulty or even broken all together.

You could also try a PRAM reset (Option+CMD+P+R at boot up, let cycle three times) and an SMC reset as well after having both correctly installed.

They were installed by me, but I'm pretty sure they were installed correctly as they worked without problems for over five years of daily use.

I've tried the PRAM reset several times and that doesn't seem to work.

Thanks for the advice, though.
