How do you get to 6gb of ram? And why not 8?

I've heard you can get up to 6, but not 8 on this model? How is this achieved and why won't the computer recognize two 4mb chips? Also, can this model accept other firmwares, like the more modern ones that allow the higher speed SATA connections?

Its just how the logic board runs. Mainly the Northbridge if you want to get into technical terms.

According to MacTracker, the 2.66 and 2.93 GHZ version of the MacBook Pro 15 inch Late 2008 can support 8 GBs of RAM

24, 2.53, 2.8 GHz can support 6 GBs of RAM

I agree with Gabe's explanation. The best place to purchase your upgraded memory is from macsales.com. In my experience, they have the right memory for your Mac. I owned the same model and tried to upgrade it with a chip from Kingston which brought my laptop to it's knees. The chip tested good, but my MBP would only work when it was removed. When I returned it and bought the chip from macsales, everything worked.
