Hard Drive Replacement problem?

I have a 21.5" iMac purchased in Oct 2009. I assume it is the 2389 version. I cannot find where it states that. Also when I check the hard drive under disk utility it shows up as Hitachi HDE721010SLA330. The instructions for hard drive replacement states to purchase a hard drive of the same type. You offer 3 types of hard drives for this model. Western Digital, Toshiba and Seagate. Are any of these similar to the Hitachi? If not, can you tell me where to find this hard drive?

Thanks!

Don't assume. Look on the bottom of your stand and give us the last three figures of your serial number.

B9U is the last 3 of my serial number.

Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 21.5-Inch (Late 2009) Specs

Identifiers: Late 2009 - MB950LL/A* - iMac10,1 - A1311 - 2308

If you change the hard drive you will need to change the temperature sensor cable.

You will also need the type of drive with the correct receptacle. Using the wrong drive or cable will cause the fans to run wild.

Here are the Apple part numbers for the cables:

922-9215 Hitachi

922-9216 Seagate

922-9217 Western Digital

Here are the replacement hard drives that will work with your 2009 machine:

Where would I find the cables? Apple or another reseller?

Google the part numbers and see who's selling what you need.

I have an early 20" and 17" and have played around with the drives. It's either 2.5" or 3.5" drive. You can put a 2.5" drive in with a suitable adaptor. The make? take your pick.

Have a look at your model at everymac.com.

Update

I had a heat sensor on the 17" and pulled it off by mistake. Took it to repair shop and they said I do not need it. Worked fine. On the 20" I did not see one but maybe some has removed it before.

Very wrong. This machine uses an Apple priority temperature sensor and the fans will run wild if the wrong drive is put in.

Seanog, you just keep getting deeper. The last 17" iMac was made in 2006. It did not have the same type heat sensors.
