What do the numbered ribbon cables do specifically?

I recently replaced a cracked display, and also a battery in my iPhone 3G. Worked great for a few weeks until the white screen of death started to appear when I press the menu button or the power button. Lately it is getting worse. I can get the display to work with persistance, but it's a pain.

I am wondering if maybe one of the cables is loose or something. I have taken it a part a few more times and disconnected and reconnected a few of the ribbon cables, (helps a little bit- but the white screen eventually returns) but I would like to know what ribbon cable corresponds to the display, or what part I can look at to see if maybe I reconnected it poorly.

anyone?

Is this the part you're talking about? iPhone 3G/3GS Headphone Jack Assembly

no, I mean the ribbon cables that are labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. like this one, for example:

Cable 1 LCD display

Cable 2 Touchscreen sensor and home button

Cable 3 earpice speaker and proximity sensor

4,5,6 are I believe GPS, antenna and camera cables.

That is what I can tell by opening it up.

You are correct about most of them- However, 4,5 & 6 are actually dock connector, headphone/volume/power/vibration, and antennas, respectively. :)

Good to know Josh.

Very strange, I snapped part of the volume rocker cable (as we know connected to the earphone jack and power) now my home button isnt working, what do you think is up with that!? any help? thanks :)

This was very helpful. I am the kind of person who likes to check things before finishing up. I had the screen lose before tightening the last two screws and tried testing it but the home button was not working.

The reason the home button was not working was because it is connected once you push the screen in closed.

Once again, very helpful and good information. Thanks!

the home button has it's own contacts that connect when the device is closed, it isn't fed through ribbon cable 2

I would advise people to be careful when opening and closing their iphone's, as i managed to break the little contacts off (both of them) and had to solder two small wires bent in a "U" shape, to replace the functionality of the previous contacts.

Although the home button is a separate entity and connects upon closing, if cable four is disconnected the it will not work.
