Display replacement : doesnt fit into the chasis

I had an iphone 5 with a cracked display after falling down.

I tried to replace the display as suggested in many youtube videos. Finally, I was about to close the display, i.e. to put the down part into the chasis (where the two opening screws are), when I noticed, that the display doesnt fit at all, because the chassis was bent, on the place the iPhone hit the ground. So, I had to take off the display several times, and put it back, after trying to bend a little the chassis, so that the display can fit. Maybe 5-10 times. After it I tried to file the chassis, it still didnt fit enough. Than I followed the glory idea of filing the display itself (like plastic is easily filed) until only after a milimeter I saw the metal isolation plate. Well, at the end the display didnt work, nor it fitted into the chasis. I put the cracked display back and I ordered a new display...

So, what could I have done better ?

Bending the aluminium with pliers is a lot better than filing in my opinion. It's cleaner, and you should wrap the pliers in electrical tape to prevent scratching. Instead of filing the whole thing and ordering a new screen I would have just bit the bullet and got a new back. The rear panel replacement can be hard, but if you take your time (especially with the 5) it's pretty simple. This all depends on confidence/experience/tools etc. but everyone on here is generally pretty happy to help out :)

Thanks for answering. I did tried, first of all to bend with pliers. However, it didn't help a millimeter. I thought naturally of buying a new back, but it meant waiting again for some days. I ordered a new display, because the first I bought, stop working.

So, my question are actually two:

1 ) What did I wrong in order for the first display to stop working (filing at the edge was my favourite, or were the flex cable clips which who started experiencing loose connection with the motherboard) ?

2 ) What could I have done with a chassis broken. -> To this question, your answer is : buy a new chassis

Best regards,

I don't think it would have been a 5S chassis? But I'm not 100% sure on the subtle differences between the 5, and 5S chassis. Perhaps it was just a dud from the company which you ordered from. Unlike screens, chassis aren't checked to see if they're working :)

I haven't ordered any chassis. It is the original which was bent, an iPhone 5 chassis.

I can bend the corners out well its just that the scratches looks terrible. any one know of a tool besides pliers but pretty affordable like under 30$ that will do a better job than the pliers?

Tool called a gtool is fantastic and a little expensive but you get what you pay for.

if all four corners had bends in it would have them like new in under 2 minutes with gtool
