Wet iPhone 5 that worked for a day, then stopped working.

Hello, I dropped my phone in the toilet then took it out after few seconds. Dried it, charged it that night, and the next day (for a whole day), my iPhone 5 worked perfectly fine with no damages.

However, after the day ended, I tried to charge my phone and the white apple logo would flash. I tried to restore it and it allowed me to restore through iTunes, however my macbook died in the middle and ever since then, my iPhone won't even let me restore.

I took it to an apple store today and the technician told me that my iPhone has water residue on the battery as well as a white square part (I don't know what it's called).

I took my sim card out of my iPhone (but not the battery) and decided to put it in rice, along with my iPhone. Do you think it will be a big problem that I didn't put it in rice right after my phone got wet?

What do you think I should do?

I lost my iPhone outside and found it after 9 days it had been rained on at least 3 times, I had a tempered glass cover on the screen and it was in an open front magpul case. It had moisture in the case when I found it and condensation was visible in the camera lens. After removing it from the case and wiping dry I immediately stuck it in a bag of rice overnight. The next day I removed the SIM card and took a vacuum with a small nozzle and vacuumed all the orifice / openings of the phone for quite awhile at least 30 minutes which cleared the condensation from the camera lens. I reinserted the SIM card and then stuck it back in the rice for 4 more days before charging it and powering it up, low and behold I got lucky and it works good as new !!!!!! :)

I'm unsure if the rice and vacuum trick is permanent as my iPhone worked great for 3 months after I dried it out then the lcd started going dim and couldn't be adjusted, it was so bad it was all but impossible to see it when outside. It still works but I feared it was dying so I bought a new phone. Good Luck hey it's worth a try go for it, you have nothing to lose.

The rice bag definitely works. I dropped my iphone5s in a bucket of water but within few seconds I took it out, switched it off and removed the sim. I dried it with a cloth first and put in in a rice bag and kept it for two full days. I was excited and surprised to see that it had drained the water completely. So yes it definitely works based on how quickly you can put it in the rice bag.

Rice is overrated---I get phones all the time sent to me dutifully put in bags of rice for days only to open them up and frank pools of liquid--not just drops or condensation.

Almost any phone that is dropped into a liquid is salvageable IF you take steps immediately to get rid of the molecules of water---for example, toss the whole phone straight into some rubbing alcohol.

We think that rice or hair dryers etc are drying a phone, but really they are not. It isn't any different than tossing a bunch of wet clothes in a garbage bag, sticking it in the sun, or rice, or whatever and hoping that the clothes in the center of the bag don't get moldy.

You gotta open that sucker up!

When we apply electricity to the "dry" phone, we cause short circuits inside the phone---not much different than if the phone was filled with little balls of wire inside that could connect things that shouldn't be connected. Sometimes we can get away with it without doing permanent harm, but sometimes a short or corrosion will damage something important.

So to answer your question:

1.) Is it a big deal that you didn't put it in rice right away? Not at all---rice doesn't really do anything. But it is a big deal that you plugged it into a charger when it was wet, and that you tried using it without opening it up and at least getting your eyeballs in there to see if it was dry and corrosion free. Lesson to learn? Get that phone open to dry.

2.) What to do now? Sell it on eBay as water damaged and buy a new phone. OR, do like machead suggests and follow a guide to open it up and clean it---at least you'll get some experience for next time. You never know, it might just need a little scrub of the corrosion and be fine again with a new battery.

3.) All water damaged phones need new batteries.

Yes - Electrons and water don't mix. You've damaged your phone and corrsion has formed. Corrosion destroys metal (electronic) components. This will not heal itself. Cleaning might restore the phone, it might not. At this point you have nothing to loose and much to gain trying to repair the damage.

Follow some the tags for repairing wet iPhones at the right if you're capable of DIY, or, have Apple repair it, or, have someone else repair it, or buy a new phone.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Hello,

There is hope for you! As you can take your phone to an experienced shop and have a pro preform water damage treatment on it.

When the apple tech opened it, he was immediately able to spot the corrosion that has formed on the battery. This corrosion destroys metal which most electronic components are made of, when you plugged it back in to the charger, thats when you kind of doomed your phone. Cleaning it with a pro, may save the phone, it may not, it depends on who you go to and how good they are at it. However at this point you have nothing to loose...

Water damage can be a tricky one and the success rate depends on your ability to spot micro corrosions and how well you clean the board. In this cleaning process you may have to replace other components, like the battery or charger port, maybe others.

Once you disassemble the the phone you should drop the logic board in an ultrasonic cleaner with the proper amount of alcohol. If you know how to solder and it is substantial water damage, I recommend removing any shield, you can solder them back together later. Once this done, blow it dry and reassemble.

You should use a new battery and charger port when reassembling, it best practice. Once assembled try top preform a hard reset, given you get a apple logo to show up. Try this treatment twice. If you do have to do it again, throw the board under a microscope and make sure there are no fractures or burnt resistors on the board.

Good Luck!

Please mark up if this helped.

Probably not. 60 days of corrosion build up could eat through the circuit board (the traces are not very thick). However at this point you have nothing to lose by trying to clean it first. Of course cleaning alone will not repair a cracked or burned component. Generally - if you have to ask if the process will work you are not qualified to do the de-solder and re-solder work of replacing components.. however once you have it apart (you've done most of the time consuming hard work) an electronics repair shop should be able to replace components if they can be located.

Apple does not repair iPhones, but will replace the entire iPhone for a flat fee; see the tutorials here with iPhone Data Recovery:

How to Fix Water Damaged iPhone

There are independent iPhone repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "iPhone repair". Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPhone serviced by an unauthorized shop, all further support from Apple will be voided.

Regards.
