Can The Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro use 8 gb of RAM?

I just purchased one PC3-10600 8 GB RAM Chip from the ifixit website, because my macbook could not handle all of my applications at once. I have a 2.3 GHz core I5 Processor, and im not sure if its okay that im using this RAM chip. My macbook seems to work fine after installing the extra RAM, but will this damage the processor? and should i buy a second 8GB RAM Chip to equally match my other one? Right now i have 10 GB of RAM (8GB and 2GB). Any suggestions on what to do would help. I am a beginner when it comes to replacing computer parts and need all the help i can get.

Relax, your OK here.

While I do recommend putting in pairs of memory to gain bank interleaving. It's not a requirement! Mixing sizes is OK as long as the RAM is the correct specs (which I'm sure you got here). If 10 GB meets your needs stay with it, If not get a second 8 GB to max out your system. Video editing and picture editing or CAD can gain performance with more memory, most other apps don't need more than 8 GB from my experiences.

Thanks for the advice, but now i am having a separate issue. After putting in the new RAM chip, my computer is now having issues with the power. everytime i close the lid, it seems to continue to run, and if i come back to the laptop an hour or two later, i have to manually turn it off by holding the power button and then turn it back on. I replaced the battery in the laptop as well but it didnt change anything except for the battery life.

Closing the lid puts the system into sleep mode (the white LED on the front will oscillate high to low and then back to high brightness to remind you) it doesn't shutdown the computer. You'll need to use the track pad (or mouse) to select the apple icon and then Shut Down... Forcing a shutdown by holding the peer button can corrupt your HD. You'll need to run Disk Utility from an external drive to check it as well as repair it if needed.

The problem i am having is that ill close it and it will go into sleep mode (white LED flickers) but when i open it again it wont start up for some reason, and sometimes the fan gets super hot as well. i cleaned my fan out earlier but im still having the issue. Ill run disk utility but if u have any more suggestions i will appreciate it.

Thats not sounding good ;-{ Take the memory module out so your back to where you were before you had problems to see if that changes things. Are you sure you put the module in correctly so the latches caught? You din't break them did you? Download this little application from the App Store Temperature Gauge There are others out there this is one of the better ones. See what it tells you about your thermal sensors and fan. Maybe it can offer a clue here.
