Not charging after replacement charging port. Stuck on battery empty

Hello all,

I had a issue with my loudspeaker it was much lower than my girlfriends iPhone 4S when playing music.

I bought a new speaker/mic and took it to a friend of a friend who owns a phone repair shop. He fitted the new speaker/mic and also changed the charging port. The Speaker sounded much better and I took it home ready to sell to a friend. I by mistake left the phone on and the battery drained and turned off about 4days ago. I took the phone out last night to charge for him, but it just stays on battery screen with the red bit at the bottom telling me it's empty. When I take the charger out it tells me to plug the charger in. When I place the charger in the cable image goes off and just show the red battery again. I left it in charge for 8 hours and when I woke up it still showed the battery was empty.

So my question really is, do I need a new battery or is it a faulty charging port - with it seeming to acknowledge that a charger is plugged in I'm not entirely sure.

Quick update:

Put the phone into dfu mode, iTunes detected the phone tried to restore but when it was "waiting for phone" it brings up the error code 2009" and back to the battery screen. Reset also doesn't work.
