Charge iPhone via wall *and* sync via USB at the same time?

My iPhone 4 was water damaged.

After having it professionally repaired, it's somewhat working.

  • Boots normally when connected to wall power.
  • Shows Apple logo for 10 seconds, then turns off, when connected to computer for power/sync.
  • Battery does not work; must be connected to wall power.
  • Wifi, Bluetooth, Cell Network do not work due to water damage.

So, I'm having a very hard time finding a way to get my data off this phone. It must be connected to the wall for power, and thus I can't connect it to my computer.

One solution I can imagine is connecting the phone to wall power *and* connecting it to the computer at the same time.

Do any adapters exist that would enable this?

EDIT:

I've just now tried charging via my Apple Cinema Display at work.

When my Macbook is not connected via Thunderbolt, the iPhone charges fine off the display's USB ports (as if it were connected directly to wall power).

However, as soon as I connect my laptop to the display, the iPhone shuts off.

There must be a short in a syncing-specific area, unrelated to power?

I don't know what to do. Can't figure out a way to get the data off this phone.

ck subs, the most likely reason for this is the your USB only supplies 500mA of power. Your wall charger should be around 1A. I would suggest that at first you replace the battery. If that will not work, replace the dock connector and then re-evaluate. The more shortcuts and homebuild chargers you try the greater the risk of permanently damaging the charging circuit on your logicboard. Hope this helps, good luck.

Check my edit re: Cinema Display. When the laptop is not connected, the iPhone boots as if connected to wall power via the display's USB ports. But the second I connect my laptop, the iPhone turns off. Short circuit in the sync path?

Nope, what is the power output on your USB when the display is off vs. on? that is where the issue is. Replace the battery and check your dock connector....:-)I did check all three of your questions about the same error.

So can you think of any way, Mac or PC, to deliver 1amp/5v power to the iPhone *while* syncing?

da

there is no way to do that. Repairing your phone would be the best way. If nothing else, get a new battery that is charged, then sync your phone and get your pictures.

The cheapest way is probably to disassemble two data cables from dx.com...

According to the standard it's the Red (+5 V) and the black/blue (ground) cable you have to connect to the wall power.

But, it seems like you have the same problem as I had, when a faulty battery was installed in my iPhone.

It might be just that one component which is the problem.

The computer is not giving enough power (max. 500 mA) to the Iphone to run the entire start sequence.

Therefore the Iphone has enough power to start booting, but not to speed up - and it dies after about ten seconds due to lack of power (normally its supplied from the battery).
