Can I get/replace just the glass for the screen?

I don't need a new LCD, I just need new glass! Can I get it somewhere? I have heard through the grapevine it is nearly impossible to replace though. Is this true?

Thanks!

Yes, and Yes Although you don't have to replace the LCD you do have to accomplish the most challenging part(s) of a full replacement.

And yes, that part is difficult to locate. Look into the availability & cost of replacing the assembly (even that is a bit challenging).

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Hi there,

Yes you can, I bought mine on ebay... make sure you buy a good quality glass, do not hesitate to pay an extra few bucks... the right price should be around 30 bucks... when you select (just) the glass make sure it matches the right Unibody of the MacBook Pro, you can get the information under the laptop, e.g.: MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model is the Unibody A1278...

The repair seems to be challenging, but armed with patience we can do it!!!

After lengthy research as I've heard of people having had a bad experience... I found an excellent video on youtube, check under Louis Rossmann videos! He's very realistic, not like other BS edited videos making it so easy... He owns one of the best repair shop in New York and really know what he's talking about, also he has no issues on showing the tips and tricks to make a good repair...

From what I could grasp, take extra care of removing all small pieces of shattered glass, also be extremely careful on the top right side (cable) and with the cam... it needs to be smooth with not a tiny little piece of glass left!!!

Also extremely important, you need the right adhesive! do not use super glue or permanent adhesive tape! the right adhesive will make the difference on having a quality repair! I ordered the adhesive tape from him, but I think you can also find it on ifixit!

Important in terms of tools, I have bought an ifixit Pro tech tool kit and the metal spudger set will make the difference in removing all little pieces of glass left! No need to open the MacBook Pro (remember you're not changing the LCD but just the front glass!), you just need to work from the front of the bezel and glass... use a heat gun or a powerful hair dryer, it will help to remove the front glass... Slide a putty knife between the rubber part around the bezel and the glass... also a tip from Rossman was to leave the LCD on, it will show you (screen changing color - brown) when you're applying to much heat, you'll avoid having destroying the LCD because of the heat of the heath gun or hair dryer...

Good luck... Well, I'll tell you more about it when I'm done and dusted with mine...
