Block Image

Toshiba Satellite A215 S4747 Screen shows"BIOS Password"box ,Beeps many times ! I have searched helping websites & YouTube. Found that its becoz of CMOS problem. For its solution ground J4 with little wire in RAM box ! it worked successfully . Only the Time & Date has changed that I fixed but didn't Update BIOS setting. It worked two whole days nicely. But again showing BLACK screen this time NO BEEP, just FAN is On,CD drive sounds CLICK & shows blinking light. When put USB flash in the slot and attach the power cord USB also light up ,nothing more happens .I checked the RAM sticks, RAM slots, External monitor nothing comes up. HDD light never blink only shows up for less than a second also did the power drain procedure for many times but No avail. Please guide me ! Thank you and sorry for a disorganized description but open for questions to give more details.

The trick you used in the beginning was a bios HARD reset and is used when your BIOS is in an unfix-able and unchangeable state. This works find but if your BIOS was having issues before you may have only treated the symptoms. I have worked with the BIOS on a few of these Toshiba's and i found that the BIOS is often in need of an update. First you want to make sure you can even get to the BIOS at this point, or at least get some screen activity.

I have a few things you might check to make sure there are not any other issues.

Press and HOLD ESC and press the power button, assuming that the screen is not damaged or the back-light has failed. Hopefully you will see something on the screen, this is a diagnostic and you should see some info on your memory, HD, and CMOS checksum errors if you have any.

If this does not work get a very bright flashlight, something in the range of 120 Lumens if you can. Boot your computer while holding down F2 for a short while. Shine the flashlight into the screen at a very close distance and move it around. You should either see your BIOS screen, a very black surface with no traces of light, or a much lighter area that looks light brownish. If you can see your BIOS screen GREAT, you most likely have an issue with your screens inverter board which you want to address first. (However given that you have attempted a external monitor i feel like the changes of this might be slim)

If you have a very black screen move the flashlight to the very top left and see if you can see any text. Since your view is limited to about a half inch area around your flashlight you may want to redo the ESC / F2 boot method while searching for text this way.

When you first boot your computer the LCD panel should be transparent to a degree and most of the light will be able to pass through onto the very back of the panel (which looks light brown) now when your computer starts up the VIDEO CHIP signals the LCD to blank or turn black (opaque) or not transparent and your light will fail to pass through to a degree. Now this is important to note because if your VIDEO CHIP is damaged then the screen will fail to switch from the transparent to opaque. (Please keep in mind that some LCD panels don't behave like this so they may appear opaque the entire time. Which can make the diagnosis a little difficult.)

Let me know what happens if you can, you may have issue with your BIOS but if you cant see your screen then its going to be difficult to figure out what it is.

Thank you so much for a detailed guidance ! I am going to do it & let you know soon! but can you kindly tell me if USB flash is showing light after connecting to USB slot , if the HDD is working fine or not? Thanks again

I have done both methods 1.Press and HOLD ESC and press the power button, and 2 .Shine the flashlight into the screen but nothing show-up! very Black screen only reflecting flashlight nothing else. One thing more If I turn the laptop on it shutdown after 10 minutes by it self ! How can I check if my HDD & Motherboard is OK? Thank you

So to check your HD, the best method would be placing the hard drive in another laptop / computer and seeing if there is an attempt to boot your operating system. This will fail most likely as certain drivers may be missing to run on the different computer, however what you don't want to see is a "Operating system not found" or "Invalid partition table" message.

Next try unplugging your laptop and removing the battery for at least half an hour, overnight just to be sure so long as it is without power for a while. Plug it back in and see what happens.

Now ... If you have a warranty you have not cashed in on yet or are willing to take your laptop to a professional STOP HERE.

If you still have the same results you might try unhooking the CMOS battery as well.

THANKS EHOW!

Now if those options don't work... This next method should only be done if you are ok with a worst case scenario or possible extra damage to your laptop. This method involves putting your laptop in a large ziplock bag and then putting it into your freezer for about 20-30 minutes. The last few attempts with this on Toshiba's has been successful for me in order to get past the BIOS post and into your operating system so you can FLASH update the bios. Key to this method is speed before bad things start to happen. First thing is first however, go here and get this bios update for your machine.

http://support.toshiba.com/support/model...

Put / install that on another computer to get / extract the ISO and use that to make a bootable USB BIOS updater. You can burn the ISO to a USB drive using Rufus.

http://rufus.akeo.ie/

Quick and easy. When you attempt to boot your computer you will need to hold down F12 to access the boot devices menu.

Now for the dangers, as you know when cold objects interact with warmer air around the object moisture condenses onto said object. Your computer is not a good thing to have moisture condensing onto while its running OR is powered on. So when you put your laptop in the freezer put something in it to help absorb some of the moisture out of the air. Baking Soda, even Tea Bags work. Or you can go pro and head down to Home Depot and pick up some Damprid. http://www.damprid.com/ Just make sure whatever you use keep it in something that wont spill into your computer. Arm and Hammer baking soda boxes made for freezers work well. **Edit, rice works well also**

TAKE YOUR BATTERY OUT OF THE COMPUTER FIRST, DONT PUT IT IN THE FREEZER

If you can take the LCD off, REMOVE YOUR RAM AND HARD DRIVE. The less components going in the better. You will just need to keep one memory stick handy when you power it on. The LCD has risk of getting stuck when frozen, however i have tried this with random junk LCD laptops screens and have had no broken or cracked screens.

Put the laptop in the ziplock bag with the arm and hammer or whatever and make sure its sealed. Wait 20-30 minutes. While your waiting bring your power cord into the kitchen with the BIOS ISO loaded onto the USB drive and prepare for when you take the laptop out. When you grab the laptop from the freezer you will have to plug it in so its ok to take it out of the ziplock bag but not for too long. You really want to aim for about 2-3 minutes outside of the freezer before you need to unplug it to be safe. Don't use the battery for this, just the power cord. Oh and dont forget to put the USB drive in the computer before you start it.

Now when you power on the laptop do not forget to hold down the F12 button to make sure that you do not boot into your OS. Hopefully you will see the loading screen and will make it past the BIOS to the boot options menu (IF NOT you might try once more) from there select the USB to boot from and update the BIOS, if this works shutdown the machine if it does not automatically. Now unplug it and put it back into the ziplock bag with the moisture absorber and seal it.

Personally i would wait 12-24 hours to make sure it gets back to room temp and has no more moisture on any internal components.

Let me know what happens. Good Luck.

oooh My GOD ! its so dangerous ,NO? but thanx anyway & i will let u know if I 'll borrow some courage to do this ;)

It is a last resort for sure. Personally i would not do it unless you were ready to throw it away. Then whatever happens happens.

I think it is bad news to meet the black screen. But if you lost your Toshiba Windows login password, you can use a Windows password recovery tool to recover it. Hope you solve your problem soom.
