White screen startup, will not load installation disk

Recently my laptop froze. After powering off and powering back on, I could get no further than the white start up screen, gray Apple logo, and the spinning wheel. After doing some research, I figured it was a hard drive issue. Replaced the hard drive and the ribbon cable connecting the drive to the logic board. With the OS installation disk in the optical drive, holding down the Option key during startup, I get an error message that states that I need to power off the computer and then power back on. After doing that, I get the same thing again.

Any ideas on what this could be or should I just take it to an Apple store?

Do you have a external HD case to install your new HD or have an external HD which can be formatted and have the OS-X installed on to it? If you do you could take your new drive out either putting it into the case or using an external HD (USB or FireWire) and try installing the OS on to it. Does it fail in the same way if it does then you have something internal thats a-miss. If it works then you know you likely have a SATA I/O speed mismatch as Machead pointed out. Check the manufactures web site for the model of drive you have to see if it has a jumper which you can set to lower the speed. You may need to contact IFIXIT sales to get the needed jumper or see about a replacement drive that works in your system.

FYI - If you don't have an external case or HD you could also use a USB thumb drive instead. I have one setup just so I can boot up under it to run disk utility as well as other tools to maintain my HD (defrag) and diagnose my system when it has problems.

I've got an adapter ordered that I can use to hook up my old hard drive to see if it still works. I'll try that first. I'll see if the new hard drive has something I can do to set the speed. Thanks for the help everyone!

What you're seeing is a Kernel Panic warning... Some of these are software, some are hardware. Since you recently changed hardware i suspect the HD you installed was wrong. I believe your laptop supports a SATA I connector/speed drive (1.5GB/s)... you may have used a SATA III drive (3-6GB/s).

I would hope it's not the new hard drive considering it was a recommended hard drive from iFixit for my specific MacBook Pro. But, I'll double check that info

Is it possible it could be something else??
