Water damage - dead - clicking sound while charging
Hello,
I have gone snorkeling with my iPhone 5 in the well trusted and tested Buffalo waterproof case I have except that this time I forgot to fasten it :(
By the time I realized, I've swam about 5 minutes. The screen was still on, very little water touched the device as it was covered after all. I noticed some water under the case (few drops squeezed up against the display all smeared) and I removed the phone right away. The screen was already off and the phone started heating up. It stayed like that for 1 hour approximately and then slowly cooled off. I waited two days and then tried charging but to no avail. I then realized if I put my ear very close to the charging connector, I hear a very subtle clicking noise TIK TIK TIK, quite frequent TIK's one another. When I remove the cable, it goes silent.
Apple wants 280 USD (Japanese equivalent of that) to replace the phone and wouldn't say what's wrong with it. I have the toolkit and am ready to take it apart but I'd like to know what I should be looking for? If the logic board is gone, I'll just leave it the way it is. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Ben
EDIT: The phone was partially fixed thanks to oldturkey's instructions. I've taken it apart, cleaned it with alcohol and put it back together. The top part of the phone was badly damaged and anything that sits there is broken. This means I have no speaker (at top), front facing camera and proximity sensor. The vibrating motor also died. The rest of the phone is good though, I just have a slight problem with the screen which was a result of me cleaning the cables with alcohol while holding the screen on top of the container (full of the liquid). The fumes must have evaporated right into the screen and this caused some damage. I uploaded this image to show what it looks like, this was right after I assembled the phone. It since started to "heal", 2 days after the operation, the screen looks a heck of a lot better but still have some white spots.
Questa è una buona domanda?
This could be your charging coil....Have you cleaned your board with a high grade isopropyl alcohol yet? Have you replaced the battery?

I see. I still have it in a rice-bag and will check this over the weekend. If it does not charge on Saturday morning when I try it, I'll take it apart to check inside. I wouldn't want to replace the battery unless I know that's the problem. I'll try to clean the board this weekend. I live in Japan and can't really read anything so the alcohol might be hard to find. Where do you normally buy things like this? How would you describe this spray to a shop keeper? I can speak Japanese but can't read a thing...

The batteries really, really do not like water. The second thing to do is the replacement of the battery after exposure. The first thing is to clean the logic board properly so as to avoid corrosion. I buy mine through a pharmacy since I prefer the 99% isopropyl alcohol. Not sure where to buy it in Japan. The Japanese spelling is イソプロピルアルコール ;-)

Thank you, that's really very helpful! I'll check this out and post back. Tomorrow is the day!

So I have news! This morning I removed the phone from rice after it being there for 10 days and to my surprise, it started up! Well, that is I saw something on the screen, the white background and Apple logo. It wouldnt go further. Once it even displayed some linux-like text running on the top of the screen and it said the kernel wasn't properly shut down etc. I then went into recovery mode and tried restoring but iTunes gives an error while its waiting for the iPhone to reboot after the initial steps are down. 4013 is the error. I now opened the phone and removed the screen / battery. The battery connector is nice and clean but the Screen connectors (1 specially) are corroded. Nothing else seems though. What am I to do? Clean the connectors and then try again? Should I remove more screws to get to more connectors? So far I removed the screen and the battery, exposing 4 connectors in total. Thanks for any help. Also, should I dry the phone in rice like this taken apart?
