Water damaged iPhone keeps rebooting - saveable?

Here's the rundown on Monday night (8th, so it's been 2ish days) :

  1. Knocked iPhone 4 into (clean) toilet
  2. Took case off
  3. Quickly wiped a bit with toilet paper
  4. Put in a bag of rice temporarily
  5. Vacuumed extra moisture out (there was little)
  6. Put back in bag, but now with two large desiccant packs
  7. 24 hours later, vacuumed again
  8. Plugged in - logo shows, then reboots

Now today (Wednesday), I went to a phone repair shop who will attempt a water-damage treatment. Apparently they have a one-of-a-kind machine that will clean the phone and prevent future corrosion. The process takes several days.

In the case that this doesn't work, is there ANY way to fix this? Surely if it at least boots, it can still be fixed? What I'd want at least is to recover the data (photos and texts). Other posts suggest a battery replacement. In any case, is this phone surely recoverable?

Harvey, there is always a possibility to get it back, for as long as no components have been shorted out etc. Since you are getting it professionally cleaned, I guess you will have to wait to see what happens. Main thing after the cleaning is to replace the battery. This is a must do....let us know how it turned out.

Hi, isn't the rebooting caused by something being shorted (the battery perhaps)? If the components have been shorted, could they be replaced?

da

1. if a component is shorted out it has failed and will not cause a reboot. It usually reboots because of power issues, 2. yes they can be replaced if they are properly identified. To replace the SMD components, one will have to have the right tools and skills, but it is possible. Never give up and wait to see what happens after it got cleaned and the battery replaced.

Thanks, that's what I thought from reading around. I went to a different store before the one I chose and told them the problem. They said if it's rebooting the logic board is shorted and recommended I go to the Apple store.

If the water-damage treatment does fix the rebooting ($70 if it works), should I also get them to replace the battery ($50)? Or should I just order a battery on the internet and do it myself?

da

Harvey. for $50 do it yourself. Use the ifixit guides to get it done:-)

Alright! There are lots of batteries on eBay - any recommended sellers?

And if the water treatment doesn't work, what should I do? Try to replace the battery anyway?

I have repair some wet iphone.

I have ultrasonic bath, i take the motherboard out, take the shields out from motherboard very carefully!! and clean in ultrasonic bath. Then dry it using isopropyl alcohol but dont brush it or some ic can be removed (happend to my once). I dont brush the motherboard.

If you can not get the ultrasonic bath, take out motherboard, shields,

and spray it with/or put in to isopropyl alcohol. If it keeps rebooting try another batery.

If you follow the guide and you do it calm and easy you can do it yourself.

Thats how i have done several times and it worked fine.

Have luck.
