I have the same issue: external screen works, internal lcd only shows white. I have replaced both lcd screen and the cable. nothing has changed problem persists.

Because the external monitor works it's not your video card or logic board I think it might be your HD. Try to boot into safe mode. Another option is to boot from original disks and run disk utility. Boot with C key while disk in and when you get to the display that shows a menu bar on top, do not start "install" but click on Utilities. From the drop down menu select Disk Utility->First Aid. Run Repair disk and repair permissions.

Hello,
Well, It was useless in my case... I did all that,updated my machine to Mountain Lion,repaired permissions and repaired disk...
Tried the SMC and NVRAM (or something like that) reset,but it was also useless...
The screen worked well before the cable being teared down with the broken hinges...
Changed the hinges,changed the cable,only get a white screen on the internal display,and a working external display...
