help on replacing ati 2600 to 8800gs?

hi, i have iMac 7.1 24 inch mid 2007 Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz (4MB L2) +4GB + ATI 2600 Pro 256MB

and i just purchase video card "GeForce 8800 GS 512mb" which was installed on iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch (Early 2008)..

I'm trying to replace/upgrade my ati 2600 because of it overheat....80~100 celcius on idel..and keep shutting my imac off after 1~2 hour of using imac..

so i disassembled my 2007 24inch imac and installed 8800 gs video card, i get LED 1 LED 2 LED3 light on after power on. then i heard chime sound with blank screen, and chime sound is keep playing every 2~3 sec....

not sure what did i wrong...do i have to do something else to replace video card?? i'm sure 8800gs video card is working one....

plz help

I think you are having an EFI problem. Boot from CD or other disk/source and then install the drivers/EFI for the VGU.

Before, as it sounds like the machine won't run with the upgraded card in it

iMac power on, LCD screen in Black screen, Chime sound every 2~3 second,,looks like my imac keep restarting....

oh and i do not understand about boot from cd or other disk/source and install the drivers/EFI for the VGU. can you please explain me ???

do you mean, boot imac with like OS X installation CD or USB (with my old ati 2600 Video card installed), and install EFI driver for video card..is that correct?? but i don't know how can i install efi driver on osx installation mode.......

You would install the update on your HD, not the optical or other boot disk. The reboot cycle is somehow related to you using that video card which may not work because the "Early 2008/Penryn" models have faster and more energy-efficient 45 nm "Penryn" processors (compared to 65 nm "Merom" processors in the original "Aluminum" models) and larger level 2 caches (6 MB compared to 4 MB), faster frontside buses (1066 MHz compared to 800 MHz), and faster memory (PC2-6400 compared to PC2-5300). So although the video card might fit, it sounds like it wont work.
