Dropped my MacBook Pro..is it okay!?

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a231/d...

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a231/d...

I was at Starbucks and the wind blew my brand new MacBook Pro off the table (onto concrete) and it dented the left corner of my laptop. Needless to say I freaked out and went into shock for about 15 mins. Anyway, the only thing that happened besides the cosmetic damage was that the internet was disconnected for a second. Other than that, everything is working just fine. The only thing that I am kind of worried about is the battery life. Also, I am worried that since it has a small opening because of the jam (as seen in the pictures) that stuff might get into the computer. It seems to me that it has weakened a little...is it me? or am I just worried too much?

Please calm my nerves or give it to me straight!

Thanks!

You'll have to go to Dunkin Donuts now that your Mac is dented up, but it should still run fine.

This happened when I am at school. I dropped my Macbook Air at about 60cm height. (I put it in between my legs) Then I tried smelling and looking for any damage, then I smelled burning at the charging port. It freaked me out cause I might not be able to charge my mac. Or while Im charging things might explode or something. Yes, I am typing this only a few minutes after the drop, so I haven't tried charging the mac or anything. Please give advice on how I can make sure no accidents happens even after some smell of burning at the charging port.

Put my mabcook air in my backpack not realizing that the zipper was busted and did not close.. stood up and put it on my back only to have my macook air drop on tile... well it seems to boot and work fine, but corner by the jack is all dented.... :(. is there a hardware diagnostic you can run?

The main thing I would do right now is make sure I had a good backup. You would also want to maintain a regular backup in case the hard drive should die. Check out the optical drive. You may well have been lucky and avoided serious damage so I would suggest you just continue using it and see what the future brings. Ralph

not helpful, the hard drive can easily be replaced.. most people have backups.. what about the MAC...????

Not always. There are times the hard drive data can be totally lost. A backup is necessary, even when the Mac runs fine. You can't rely on luck.

I would be worried by the unit warranty status now that the MBP has been dropped and show case damages.

You should see my MacBook Pro, I've got all four corners dented and I've seen worse and still working ;-}

Mac's seem to hold up better than many other laptops, but I won't push my luck. You need to balance your love of a blemish free system to your work needs.

With laptops in general you need to be on top of your backups as one day you'll find that last drop did it in.

Breaking down the file types into different groups can make it easier to understand where they need to be.

- OS & App files need to be on the first partition of your primary HD.

- If you can move temp files to your second partition (see below) Each apps have settings (pref or internal) to alter their location (some can't be alterd).

- What you download or create should be on your second partition and/or external HD.

Partitioning:

Laptops - Small HD systems, leave as one partition. If you have a larger HD think about setting up a second partition.

Desktops - Best to have at least two partitions on the internal HD (most have larger HD's - 500meg or bigger). Tip: use pref settings or folder aliases to make getting to the second partition automatic.

Partitioned drives makes backing up easier & quicker as you don't need to backup your OS & Apps as frequently as your data so you can focus the backup on one partition.

External HD's:

Everyone should have at least one external to backup your system.

I have three!

First - Small HD which I have a clean install of my OS to boot from and has my diagnostic and maintenance tools (could be a Flash thumb drive). As you can't defrag the partition/Drive you booted from you use this drive to boot from to defrag your files (checking them first for corruption)

Second - My video editing drive, fast big drive to work off of (defraging after each project)

Third - Backup, holds anything I care about or can't replace from CD/DVD.

Burnable CD/DVD's - Not as reliable as a HD (slower to write or read from as well). Still useful to hold music or downloaded stuff. Best to have a few copies just in case.

Flash drives - more reliable than burnable CD/DVDs for long term storage. But! if you over use them (lots of over-writes) they do degrade.

This was very good.. bit more than I wanted but can file this info for later.. thanks a lot...

I think it's brilliant and hopefully people will follow some advice on backup. You should have been worried. Letting all Mac users know, the computer hard drive can be damaged and data can be lost. What the original post was about how to "calm down". Well, you've received the message. BACK THAT STUFF UP. everybody...

I dropped my lovely Mac at an airport two days ago while I was taking it out of my backpack to put in a bin for screening. Someone jostled me right as I took it out of the bag, and before I knew it I was hearing a sickening thud and watching the bottom part of my Tech21 Impactology case fly off my computer. I pulled myself together enough to pick my Mac off the floor and inspect the damage. Luckily, the snap-on case seemed to have absorbed most of the impact. It was bent and dented at the top and bottom left corners... I almost breathed a sigh of sweet relief... until I noticed that the bottom of my gorgeous machine was also dented, just a little, but enough to make my stomach churn. I was worried sick all through the rest of my journey. On top of the cosmetic damage which pained me to look at, I was worried that perhaps the drop had damaged a crucial internal component of my computer. I actually booked a Genius Appointment during my layover in the middle of my journey. I walked into the Apple Store today with dread and apprehension and they ran diagnostics on it. Everything checked out fine! Nothing was wrong with my machine at all! Apparently the only moving part of the new Macs is the fan and that wasn't moving when my computer took a dive so nothing internal was damaged. And they said it's unlikely that anything will come up in the future, and if it did they would just fix it under my AppleCare, without even referencing this event as the cause, since they had already checked it out and deemed it okay and unaffected by the fall. I decided that fixing the dent (which would require getting the entire unibody replaced for almost $600) wasn't really worth it since they insisted that it wouldn't interfere with the functionality of my computer. Also, it wouldn't really be my computer anymore if they replaced the entire body. Maccie and I have been through a lot together. She's been there for me at 3am when I'm sobbing and trying to type a coherent essay before my deadline. And she's been there for me when I couldn't go home and needed to Skype my Mum just so I could see her face. I would never change her, I love her too much, just the way she is. I walked away feeling like a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders. Now I just have to get used to this ding on the left bottom corner of my computer. Sigh...maybe it'll grow on me. %#*@, these machines are champs though. My old Acer would probably be dead now. I guess I need to get a more butch name for my Mac now, seeing as how she's survived a nasty fall and all. Maccie is a little too soft for a champ like her

Macs are pretty resilient, I've dropped mine a few times before (although on more giving surfaces than concrete, but still) and it's no worse for the wear.

I back mine up every day that is definitely necessity especially if you do things like video editing that could crash very badly.... Bad experiences over here

Nate - Try using an external HD for that.

HD's get fragmented over time (primary drives more so). Video editing is one of the worse in fragmenting HD's. Using an external drive allows you to defragment the drive easily so it runs more smoothly.

Besides the primary drive won't bog down (or crash) from excessive frag. Drive Genius is a good app to defrag your drive.

I do but do you mean for all video editing? I do videos on my mac then export the finished product and delete it off the computer. Is that bad?

Its the file churning that fragments HD's (creating a new file, deleting files, editing them, making them smaller or bigger)

My MacBook Pro 13 inch fell off my bed about 2 feet on my carpet. It was opened and fell opened with no external problems. Im worried if it broke the hard drive or any internal parts.
