Faulty LCD-panel or bad LVDS cable?

Hi guys,

In the middle of the screen of my Macbook unibody, there's a zone/column not showing any data. The column exist of black/white bars.

Block Image

At first I immediately thought --> bad LCD but sometimes when wiggling the display, the white/black bars become colored lines, which makes me think its a connection or a cable issue (LVDS). In order to buy the correct replacement parts, i would really like to know your opinions and/or experiences.

Additional important info => the bars come up immediately when booting the Macbook, however working on an external monitor is 100% ok (which can probably rule out GPU-issues?)

Thanks!

Yves

Looks like a bad panel. It is possible that whenever you manipulate the display, the TAB on the LCD makes contact.

Thanks for the replies guys!

@Mayer: as stated in my original post here above: working on external monitor is 100%. I guess I will try to replace/check the LVDS cable first, before ordering a new LCD-panel. If that doesn't work, I'll buy a new LCD. Already getting nervous to remove the glass panel :-) some do come off like nothing and others feel like they have been attached with Loctite glue :-b

Will post back with the outcome!

Regards,

Looks to me your LCD display is damaged. The connections to the glass have broken off.

Hi Dan, I first checked and replaced the cable as per Mayer suggestion, but problem still persisted. After ordering and replacing the LCD-display, everything was back to normal! So in the end, the LVDS cable was fine! Thanks for your support!

hey yvesneels,

I have the exact same problem, with the same column of black / white bars in the same position. the strange thing is that if I press or incline the display, sometimes the problem disappears and the display returns to work correctly.

are you sure that the problem is the the LCD and not the lvds cable?

da

My experience the white & black bars are caused when the connections on the edge of the LCD have broken off. Often caused by a bang on the top edge. And your correct, the twisting or angle of the display can effect the display as the connections are making and breaking contact. The LVDS cable symptoms tend to be messed up display image (blurring or color shift or bars).

@franc valentiniI am a bit confused here ;-). yvesneels stated on Jun 19 that replacing the LCD repaired the issue and the error does look like a TAB error.

Hook it up to an external monitor. If the issue persists, the problem is with the GPU. If not, then look to the cable.
