Why won't my iPhone 3GS turn on?

Yesterday, my iPhone suddenly died and will not turn on. I've tried hard resetting and the computer doesn't register it when plugged in. It was holding full charge until it died and has not been exposed to water.

I find many parallels between my situation and this question Hard reset doesn't work. Not charging & not responding to Itunes. since I did keep getting the "Charging is not supported with this accessory" warning occasionally.

How would I determine if the problem is indeed the power chip? If it is, how would I fix it?

Angela, ""Charging is not supported with this accessory" warning occasionally." could just be a bad cable. I would start of by using a USB cable that is known to be good and proper for the iPhone. There are many of the cables that will not work, or occasionally fail. After that you want to make sure that you dock connector is clean, does not have any broken or bend pins. Clean it with some isopropyl alcohol and a few puffs of compressed air. Make sure that you try an AC adapter and different USB ports on your computer. do not connect your phone via a hub, and if on a desktop, use the rear USB ports. If that does not work, I suggest that you replace the battery for sure, as well as the dock connector. Then re-evaluate for any damage on the logic board. All of the logic board repairs require special knowledge, skills and tools. Only then can you be reasonably be sure that it is your PMIC as well as other SMD components. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks OldTurkey, I've already tried three different USB cables with the phone and cleaned the dock connector. All of the USB cables worked fine with my ipod touch 2g, but the message kept showing up in the past 4 months I've had the iPhone.

The battery did not appear to be failing in any way and was probably around 80% before the phone died. I measured the voltage between the two outer contacts to be 3.85 V. Should I still look into getting a new battery? Also, is there anyway to test the dock connector?

Angela, no, there really isn't an easy way of checking the dock connector. If you have had issues with the "Charging is not supported with this accessory" message, then I would go ahead an replace the dock connector. Unless the battery has been changed within the recent past, I'd definitely change it. It may just come to the end of its lifespan. Hope this helps, good luck.
