Keyboard does not work. Track pad and power button work

My keyboard does not work. In fact all the keys are no longer functioning. But, the keyboard backlight works. The track pad and power buttons also work well.

I have tried using an external USB keyboard and it works. But, at times when i press a button just a single time, the letter appears many many times.

was the keyboard liquid damaged ?

da

Thanks Lemerise for your question but as far as i know it was not liquid damaged. it started behaving funny on its own. i bought it from the uk but now i reside in a developing world where i cannt get apple support.

Humidity can also effect things.

Also can you give us the last four digits of your serial number so we can correctly ID your system.

da

thanks a lot Dan. The problem is I dont know how to open the laptop

and we have no apple support shop in my country. I am just praying

that it should not be the keyboard but some cable inside.

the last four digits of my serial number is MATN. hope this helps and

hoping to hearing from you.

You'll need to open up the system to check the cable connection as well as see if you have any moisture damage (water or humidity).

Are you able to do this?

Do you have the needed tools, ESD protection & enough light to work on your system?

Even if you open the system up there is a strong likelihood you'll need parts.

I've corrected your model info so you can now select the correct guide for your system (click on the top right picture).

Review the iFixIt guide. If you don't have the needed tools & ESD mat & wrist strap you'll need to get them.

Are you able to do this? As I stated before there is a strong chance you'll need to replace some parts. How do you plan on getting them?

The guide you want to review is the Upper Case Replacement As you can see almost everything must be removed to even get to the keyboard. This is not an easy repair on this model.

Think this though carefully, you still might find another way to get your system to an Apple Store or Apple authorized repair center. Do you have any friends flying to a city that does, or can you ship your system directly to Apple?

Thanks a lot Dan. I am so scared just by seeing the extend to which i will have to go to reach the keyboard. I do not have the necessary tools required and neither do I have the required skills.

i might consider sending it abroad but the problem is i did not buy it from an apple store but from ebay in 2011. I dont know if the store will accept to repair it and will i need to pay a large some of money? thanks and hoping to hearing from you

Don't worry ;-} Apple does not care where you bought your system. Ask for an estimate when you send it in. If you don't mind me asking where are you?

Hello :D

I tore down entirely mine using the exact same guide (and the tools from ifixit such as the Pro Tech Toolkit, quite useful by the way). Even the keyboard was entirely torn down (I separated all layers, removed keys, their mechanism and both contact surfaces) ! So I know quite a bit about this keyboard ^^ In fact the keyboard and power button are on the same connector. The fact your backlight is functioning is normal : it is plugged on another connector as you can see in the guide.

Personnaly, I think the same : your keyboard is either disconnected or dead. Reaching the keyboard is not hard, just very long. If you are and stay patient, follow the guide, there is absolutely no problem, weather or not you are a skilled man ^^

If you still is scared about the idea, you'll have to find a way to send it to Apple

thanks a lot. So the first thing is i have to get the screw driver set. i am in cameroon a country in Africa. the thing is even if i dismantle the laptop how will i know what part is bad. I gave a local repairer and he tested the keyboard and set it tested positive but that one set of row tested negative. I do not know if this is helpful in any way.
