This sounds like a battery calibration issue. I've had batteries that believed they had juice left and died before hitting 10%. I don't imagine this would be a problem with a new battery.

At minimum, I would advise running your battery until it's empty, then while leaving it off, recharge it to full. While I do not have a Desire, I imagine it indicates a full battery with a bright green light or something along those lines.

If that does not do the trick, a more indepth battery calibration guide can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...

Be aware of the warning in that thread: this more indepth method may end up damaging your battery.

Before doing anything like a hard reset, you may just want to clear the /cache. Sometimes the contents of the cache will cause problems with the charging battery systems.

Here's how you do it.

1) Turn off your phone.

2) Now, hold the volume control down like you are reducing the volume.

3) Keeping volume control held down, press the 'on' button.

4) Once it is booted up, you can release the 'volume down'.

The phone will have booted to a boot screen.

You can scroll/select what you want by the volume control and then the power button.

5) So, using the volume button, scroll to FASTBOOT.

6) Now, not touching anything else, press the power button.

The screen will change.

7) Scroll to RECOVERY.

8) Press the power button.

You will now wait until another screen appears.

9) Scroll to

'wipe partition cache'

10) press power button

you should see

---wiping cache...

Formatting /cache...

Cache wipe complete.

11) Now, scroll to

'reboot system now'

12) press the power button.

The system will boot normally.

This just deletes old upgrade files, etc. If you are having problems, this may cure it. It's not the usual clear cache. That may or may not really clear everything out.
