Used iMac Not Booting, What Should I look for?

I just bought a 27" iMac off of Craigslist, 2010, and it was sold as not complete and without a hard drive.

I opened it up and was struck by the fact that everything appears to be in order, it has 16GB of RAM, and only the hard drive is missing. There were quite a lot of screws missing (only three holding on the panel, should be 8), and the isight was dangling loosely...

When I first received it, i tried to boot it up. No dice. Nothing at all. No beeps, no whir of the fan, just as if weren't plugged in. Figured that might be related to the hard drive missing, so I put in an old one that has OSX on it and still nothing.

I'm concerned that perhaps the Power Supply isn't working properly and/or needs replacing?

What should I be looking for in something like this? All cabling looks intact, and if not for the hard drive, I'd think it was A-OK.

Thoughts?

Be very careful when ordering from GainSaver. I've had to return my last 3 out of 4 parts for either not correct part or non-working parts. They also just don't answer emails or questions.

Thanks. Their reseller rating isn't actually not too bad! 8.1...

Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but that's a cheaper option.

You would start in this case by observing the diagnostic LEDs inside the machine. They can tell you quite a bit about the startup process and how far it is going.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Thanks for the reply, machead.

The trickle power (ONE LED) is illuminated when AC is plugged in. When pressing the power button, no other lights go on...remains at one. So we have trickle power and that's it.

I ordered the PSU from this site this morning with overnight shipping, it will be here tomorrow. That will be the easy fix.

I took it into the Genius Bar today and it was apparent that I knew more about what was going on than the Genius and he just threw out logic board because he went in the back and checked out the service manual. I have the same manual.

If it IS in fact the logic board (which is about 50/50 at this point), do I need to buy the EXACT SPECIFIC version or can I get one from a similar time frame and be fine?

I found this:

It's for the late 2009, mine is a 2010. Is that close enough? The price is great.

Thanks again for the help!

Depends on your expectation for "close enough" this site is great for comparing Mac models. Aside from speed the logic boards might be compatible but I would seek a guarantee from your vendor that the hardware will swap before purchasing.

Nice, I will take a look! Thank you!
