Why does LCD screen have a vertical 1 1/4" solid white line?

Having read about lcd issues from other posted questions it appears that my issue is a bit different. I woke my computer from its nap and there was a wide solid white vertical bar about 1 1/4" wide. Just previously there where no vertical lines at all. When i change the resolution the white bar remains. When i start the computer the affected bar area is made up of a lot of vertical colored lines and by the time i am logged in it is a solid white bar. Is this a failing LCD screen or something else?
