Looking for advice in updating hardware for OS X 10.6.8 or higher.

I am a novice when it comes to computers. But can see that if I get the right parts and a manual I stand a good chance of updating my computer to run OS X Snow leopard or higher. I currently run or have the following on my MacBook A1181 model (late 2006):

Operating System: OS X 10.5.8

Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core Duo

Memory: 512 MB 667 MHz DDr2 SDRAM

Programs/App's I'd like to use on all my devices (iPhone, iPad) are as follows:

Mail

iTunes

iCal

iCloud

Address Book

I have been told to be able to run these programs so that they all sync via iCloud I need to be running OS X Snow leopard or higher on my computer. If such is the case, I need to update my processor as well as my memory. I am good with my hands and can put things together but don't know what parts I need to upgrade/replace to do so.

What do I need to purchase and probably more important is what I want to do a possibility?

Matthew, your machine is limited to Snow Leopard due to its Core Duo processor, and unfortunately Snow Leopard isn't capable of much or possibly any iCloud functionality. Lion is necessary, and Mountain Lion is best. Therefore I agree with Machead in that a newer machine would probably be the most logical path to get everything you want. You could easily upgrade your machine to 1-2GB RAM and install Snow Leopard, and do everything on your list short of iCloud, but it's questionable as to whether it's worth making the effort, only to end up short of what you really want.

If you wanted to go all out, you could upgrade the logic board to Core 2 Duo, and the RAM to 2GB, and then install Lion, but you're looking at significant cost, and you're ending up with a machine that can never go to Mountain Lion due to an insufficient video chip. A board would probably be about $150 on eBay, and iFixit has guides to the replacement. If you're interested in learning about the various boards and what to look for, here's a video guide I made on A1181 logic boards:

Good luck!

The first thing you should do is sell this to get money for a new laptop. ''This system can run the last version of OS X 10.6 but you'd need more RAM

Putting more RAM into the box, that still wont meet your need is IMHO not cost effective.

If this answer was helpful please remember to mark it accepted.''
