trick, it is still salvageable. The very first thing you want to do is to clean it. Get yourself 90%+ isopropyl alcohol first. You should get that through the local pharmacy. Anything below that contains to much water and may leave some more residue. Disassemble your iPod by using these guides. You also want to take a look at the teardown. Once disassembled, clean every part with a soft brush and isopropyl alcohol. Use the iPhone 3G guide from here to show you how to clean the parts. Once it is clean, check for corrosion and any obvious damage. Make sure it is absolutely clean. Replace the battery and reassemble your iPod. Check for further, if any, damage. In the meantime, until you get to clean it, do not continue to try to plug it in or to turn it on. It may increase the likelihood of short circuiting the logicboard.
