computer dead, power magsafe shows charging

So i recently came across a family member who had a macbook pro 17" sitting around. its mid 2010 with 2.8 ghz. the magsafe light showed that it was charging, but when you press the power button, nothing. I took a couple hours yesterday to read through all the information on this site then took the plunge and cracked it open. it became quite clear there had been a spill and there were parts that were sticky. so i tore down the whole computer, cleaned everything, then put it back together. once it was all back together, i plugged the magsafe on, and it was taking a charge. crossed my fingers and hoped that the power button would work. no such luck. anyone have any suggestions? what is it that won't even let it power on??

A blown logic board. or top case. You might try shorting the logic board power jumpers to see if it's only the top case/power button or cable, the POST may give indicate other problems once you get the power circuit working.

i shorted the power. it turned on and booted up. I shut it back down and put everything back together. I hit the power button and got nothing. i took the back case off again, shorted the power again, and it started up. this time, it got past the opening screen, began go to the main screen, then it just shut off. i shorted it again, this time it shut off after the bootscreen but never even got to the main screen. so now i am able to get power going to it, but only by shorting it and it shuts off after about 30-60 seconds.

The board is blown, one or more components fail under prolonged power, either overheating or shorting out. That you get no POST (power on self test) chimes, beeps or lights makes me think it's not a major component (RAM, CPU or other POST essential). DIY fix would be to replace the entire board, identifying and fixing a bad individual components are not DIY repairs, they require advanced tools and skills.

More than likely the liquid damage fried the logic board on the inside. I've also see the same issues with a dead hard drive(which could've been damaged from liquid as well). Try booting it without the hard drive. And if there is still no response, then my conclusion would be the logic board.

thanks, I'll give that a try now. from what i could see, the logic board didn't seem to be sticky at all, but the hard drive looked like it took most of the damage. hoping this will work

took the hard drive out, still nothing

Without a HD or install disk it has no boot OS.
