Snapping iPod together causes battery to drain?

I swapped my HDD for a 128gb mSATA SSD using a ZIF adapter. Everything was working (iTunes detected and restored the iPod successfully, it even showed the 120gb capacity) until I snapped the panels back together, then the iPod started getting hot and the battery drained very quickly. I separated the two halves again, and again it started working. I'm not sure what's going on.

I would make sure that you have enough clearance between the battery and the back cover. It sounds like it is shortening out due to not enough clearance.

I had considered that, but the battery works fine now that I've replaced the old hard drive and reassembled everything. I even made sure that the SSD was not making contact with either the back panel or the battery's ribbon cable.

I think I'm going to swap out my slim back for a fat back. Will my headphone jack assembly still work in the fat back?

Yes it will, just check the length and make sure it reaches without difficulty. The thicker back usually has a longer cable for the jack and the hold switch, but in your case it may not make to much difference, since you are not using a thicker hard drive. Hope this helps.

I appreciate the feedback. The current set of ribbon cables has a lot of give (much more than the .12" difference in thickness between the two models), so I'm feeling confident that the fat back won't be a problem.
