So my friend was taking a picture of me and dropped my iphone 4s. It had a case and didn't shatter, but the screen itself no longer works. From the sound it makes, it seems as if the phone itself still works (camera noises), but how do I restore it to its original state?

It could be that a ribbon cable from your LCD/digitizer to the motherboard came unseated. We would check that first. Secondly, if there is no screen image but the screen does not looked shattered, then you likely damaged your LCD and not the digitizer. The digitizer is the glass that is glued to the LCD...they are actually two separate parts.
