Screw holding optical bay won't come out, what should I do?

One of the screws holding the optical drive was welded into place...I think I've stripped the seat for the Philips head screwdriver off the screw head trying to get it to turn. What can I do to remove this screw? It's one I apparently don't need as I'm replacing the optical drive with an OWC Data Doubler Optical Bay Hard Drive and longer screws are included in the kit. Bugger!

At this point you have to consider the ramifications on what you do next:

- Prey off the Mechanism from the case (if doing so only damages the Mechanism which is broken anyway) without damaging anything else.

- Grasp the screws head (if possible) with a jewelers clamp.

- Drill out the screw head with a left turing drill bit, making sure to mask off the area so the metal chips don't find there way deeper inside causing a short. If your lucky the whole screw may come out

- Drill out the screw head & body with a drill that is smaller than the screws shaft making sure not to drift from the center point. Then carefully pick out the screws remains. If you need to use the screws mounting.

Good Luck!

I was able to drill out the center of the optical drive screw (the one under the black module totally stripped on me) but not totally destroy it. I used a dremel with a smaller diameter bit than the screw, and then I could use the torx screwdriver that came with the OCW kit to unscrew the little bugger. thanks for the ideas! As terrifying as it was to bring a dremel close to the guts of my new MacBook Pro ;-/ it worked!

Maybe you can use some sort of instant superglue?

Apply it to the tip of a screwdriver and then insert the tip onto the screw and wait a while to allow it to set up. Then carefully try to remove the screw.

Or maybe try to use a screw extractor?

Im not a specialist in such things, maybe another here can help you more specific.

Good luck.
