no start up chime or display

I recently replaced a faulty power supply, when i try to turn it on, the fans come on and i can hear the hard drive spinning, but there is no start up chimes or display.

-FIXED- when my power supply went out, it did so during boot up, this corrupted the boot portion and somehow damaged one of my ram sticks, after replacing the power supply, i removed the bad stick (causing the no chimes) and put in a new hard drive and re-installed the os, it booted just fine. i was even able to get data off my old hard drive and reformat it to be an external drive.

--EDIT-- The ram was not damaged, was trying to use two ram from different manufactures. Needed to be two identical sticks.

Thank you post mordum. I think i purchased your iMac on E-bay for parts not working. Thanks for clarifying the 1174 does not have LED lights-or does it?

da

will, this question is 2 years old.

Will they all have the LED's but the view might be obstructed. See link in comment below.

The problem was using two different ram sticks. I upgraded a mac book ram for a friend and tried using the two old sticks in this computer, they were same size but different manufacturers. Using either one and the computer worked booted, but both together caused problems.

The chime means all is well - you have no display so all is not well. Check the LED lights inside the machine... it may point to the source of you other problem.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I've found if i only use one of my two ram sticks it will start, the screen turns on, and the chimes play. the circle spins for 10-15 seconds, and them the system shuts down, and this is the problem i had before i changed out my power supply. any ideas?

What are the LEDs showing during this time.
