Step 2 of disassembly

i have a problem in step 2 in the manual for disassembly of the iPhone 3gs iPhone 3GS Front Panel Assembly Replacement.

The problem is that I only have the glass following me up with my suction cup, not the display itself. I don't want to pry in there, but what else is there to do? The glass is only loose in the home button end and I'm not sure I can continue to take the whole glass out.

The glass have been repaired once, so I realize this must be affecting how things are with my phone.

When the glass is loose on its own like this, what can I do to get the display assembly to come up so I can exchange my battery?

Press glass back down perfect. Then using hairdryer, heat up glass so the adhesive strongly attaches to the glass again. Let it cool all the way. Then carefully try the suction cup removal.

Well, that might work, but I think the job done on it seems to be dodgy. There's no other way to lift the display? Couldn't the hair dryer actually damage the phone?

I'm trying to find out if I can remove the glass without the display following up, lift the display out separately, get new adhesive for the glass, or possibly if I need to get new glass too. That's a bit expensive though. I saved $20 on the glass repair, but paying for it now instead. :-/

Adhesive is more tacky when warm, just warm it up a bit, so you get some adhesion.
