Mac Mini Late 2012: looking for a replacement capacitor for 157 6k 231 for L2012 Mac mini

I have been having issues with my Mac mini. Its been doing a bunch of random things like not waking from sleep, sometimes showing the questions mark folder, waking up randomly and other stuff. I opened it up to clean it and replace the CMOS battery and see if there was an issue and found a blown cap behind the USB ports. I believe its 157 6k 231. as a similar sized cap is near it sharing the same height and dimensions. I can’t seem to find the cap anywhere nor can I find a dead Mac mini 2012 logic board to use as a doner board. Can anyone help me? my mini is a CTO late 2012 2.6Ghz I7, 16GB ram 1TB SSD

Mac mini Late 2018: My 2020 Mac Mini not reporting correct memory

I just finished installing the 32 GB upgrade to a new Mac Mini 2020/2018. Only difficulty was re-installing the antenna cable (not the screw, the cable). Tiny fingers help.

But I do have a problem - Ordered the memory from Crucial (as I have for years…decades? For a variety of computers). Installed a single 32GB SO-DIMM in the slot closest to the center of the device and removed the 2 x4 GB SO-DIMMs.

But the About Mac is still reporting 2x4 GB in the 2 slots.

Rebooted a couple times, no change. Very strange. Anyone got any ideas?

BTW: Writing this on the Mac Mini, so it does power up correctly, and connects to the internet correctly.

I tried changing power cable, disconnecting all peripherals, even reset system management controller (leave the power cable unplugged for > 15sec) etc, none worked. So I brought it to repair store, but they can’t be sure if it is the embedded power supply or the motherboard and insist non-refundable diagnostic payment to find out.

Mac Mini Mid 2011: Drive boots multiple times when internal but once from USB

Hello,

I have a problem with my 2011 Mac Mini, High Sierra.

When I use my drive as an internal drive, my Mac needs to reboot multiple times (1-3 mostly), but when I use the same drive and use it as an external via USB it boots just once.

Multiple boot-ups only happen from a cold boot up. Once it goes to the login screen and I log in, turn in off, and then on again, it boot ups normally.

I have reset pram, SMC, and all that stuff.

I reinstalled my os multiple times now. Now I will try to install it fresh from the bootable drive.

Also, I have swapped the flex cable from the original to a replacement one from aliexpress. I do not have the original one anymore, so I cannot test if it is the problem.

I would really appreciate some help with this matter as I want to sell it but I do not want it to fail a new buyer.

Cheers!

Mac mini Late 2018: Torx 6 Screw Head Fabricating Error? How to remove?

I recently purchased a late 2018 Mac MIni and purchased ram to manually upgrade the memory. I’ve worked with Mac Mini’s going back 11 years, have done full tear downs and rebuilds many times. When I went to remove the antenna plate(step 2) one of the six torx security screws seemed not to work with my tr6 screwdriver. All five other screws worked fine. Thought at first it was stripped, nope, actually the opposite. It appears the screw was not fabricted correctly, the screw’s head is only about half as deep as it should be, and has a small bead of metal remaining at the center of the screwhead, making it impossible to turn the screw with the intended screw driver, because the screw driver head can’t sit down inside the geometry of the screwhead. Wanted to check in here for possible solutions before I gave it my best go. Anyone had this issue come up for them? Really don’t want to mess this up. I saw online people suggest using a rubber band to unscrew stripped screw heads, but not sure that will work in this situation. Appreciate any suggestions.

Mac Mini Mid 2011: Reboots on its own!

Same issue here. My friend said that hers (mid 2011 2.5ghz) always chimes 3X on startup, and I resolved that issue when I installed a new 1TB SSD, but when I used her most recent time machine backup (high Sierra) from 2019, the issue remained. I also switched out the ram with some compatible ram I had laying around and that helped somewhat.

I tried erasing SSD and using her oldest time machine restore from 2017, and that worked for like half an hour, enough time for me to remove the 3GB of crap from the desktop and place in her documents folder and then zap the PRAM & reset the SMC, but then it got back to the restart cycle boot, where every time there was power to it, it would recycle the startup.

then I erased the SSD AGAIN, and tried a clean install of El Capitan and kept getting the “can’t install on this computer/no installation packages” message, and finally figured out that I had to change the unit’s date to January 2017 in Terminal, and that actually worked!

so now I have a fresh install of el Capitan OS X install, with NO 3rd party software, and only the OS, and when I try to shut down it restarts, and after typing all this it just now restarted on its own, fml. (BUT when it starts up it gets to the login WICKED FAST!)

so could it be her power supply is taking a crap? She needs this computer for work, and for now she’s borrowing my 2012 mini, but I’ve been losing sleep over this damned 2011, as this was “supposed “ to just be a simple hard drive upgrade.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Mac Mini Late 2014: Where are the two ambient temperature sensors on a late 2014 Mac Mini?

I’m monitoring the temperature of all the sensors on a Late 2014 Mac Mini (Macmini7,1) and I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference between the “Ambient" thermometer and the "Ambient 2" thermometer is? Even better does anyone know exactly where they are inside the unit?

I’ve got the Mac Mini downstairs in the basement and as we're now moving into Spring and eventually Summer, I want to keep an eye on things down there to ensure they don’t get too hot.

The actual room temperature is 15.1ºC and the Ambient is reading at 27ºC and the Ambient 2 is reading at 25ºC. Does anyone know much about the placement of those two sensors in the Late 2014 Mac Mini? I assume they are measuring air temp inside the case, and not inlet temperature. I’ve not been able to find much online about where those two sensors are inside the unit.

I’m more curious than anything else. I’m happy to use the ambient sensor temperatures as a proxy for the overall environment, but I’m curious as to where they are.
