The cause of the cracks along the front edge (right where they'll hurt your palms the most) is from the plastic bumpers on the top case impacting the bottom case when the lid is closed. This weakens the plastic--you can see it on most MacBooks--and the strips eventually break completely off. I've taken to attaching those little self-stick felt circles (usually found in a friendly green color) next to the plastic bumpers to absorb some of the impact. Also I advise my clients to close the lid gently rather than slapping it shut, in hopes that will help. Yes, Apple will replace it if the computer is under warranty. I've had them turn down a few folks who were out of warranty. A new top case from ifixit is over $150 last I checked, so prevention is definitely worthwhile.
