@thecat847 yes, it absolutely could be the software. Now, that is not to say it is not the HDD. You won't hear "any hard drive falling sounds" on a dead drive. I would consider replacing the HDD as well. You can alway get an external adapter for the hard drive and try to access it as an additional drive from your computer.
