It is important to look at the faces and see what those look like. that will give you an indication on how effective your engine burns the fuel It sounds to me like you could be having issues with either getting enough air for a good combustion, into your engine or you could have an issue with your catalytic converter which does not allow your gasses to exit properly. That will cause an increased fuel consumption and definitely decrease teh engine performance.

Compression test and leak-down test are also a pretty good indicator of what might be going on with either your valve train or your piston rings etc.
