Laptop won't start up properly

I got hold of a Dell Latitude E6500 from my mother recently. I tried to boot it up, but each time, it filled up the startup bar, then beeped and showed me an error message and it refused to start up. Each time I pressed F1, it just went to the recovery menu. How do I start it up properly?
