The solution for this problem is to put the iPod in recovery mode and restore it. There is no other known way to get out of this state.
Follow [guide|16507|this guide] to get the iPod into recovery mode and restore it. This should explain the details on how to do it, but if you have any questions I'll answer them if I can.
-If the device is running iOS 7 or newer, restoring it will require entry of your Apple ID, because of the activation lock on these devices. On iOS 8 and up, the data is encrypted with a key Apple cannot recover. The only way to get it back is to guess your password.
+For iOS 7+ devices, restoring it requires that you know the Apple ID due to the Activation Lock these devices have as a part of the OS. For iOS 8+ devices, this is your only option to recover the device as the password is encrypted so Apple cannot decrypt it. You will need to guess on a device you need the data from.

-Some time ago, I opted to turn this procedure into a [guide|16507|guide], as explaining it is getting old.
-
-'''I am assuming no data is wanted in this guide! If you need it, crack the password or find a way to remove it first as I don't cover this.'''
-Be glad this predates iOS8. You're screwed on iOS8 since it encrypts your device with this password.
