Unfortunately the lens contains several motors and sensors and an electrical or mechanicl fault with any of them will generally just give this “lens error”. You’re best bet is probably to look out for another on eBay adverstised as “spares or repair” and with some other fault. It probably wouldn’t be that hard to make one good camera out of two duds!
