Have you been able to disable the hardware write protect and put the device in developer mode yet? Sorry I didn't see your question earlier.
If you can create the recovery media for this device with the Chromebook Recovery Utility and another chromebook or PC that supports USB devices or SD card media that is compatible with your target chromebook you should be able to reflash the device back to factory image after cycling it into developer mode and then back to standard mode.
