charroo you really just need a few additional tools. You still need an oscilloscope just like in the "olden" days. LED/CCFL tester is always good to have. This will allow you to test the panels backlight. Than you need a good multimeter, a capacitance meter still comes in handy. After that, get a couple of good hand tools like a set of Philips screwdrivers. What you definitely will have to have is a good set of schematics. Since most of the boards are meant to be replaced there is not a lot of component information out there. So I'd focus on that. Always keep a good supply of common replacement boards. I prefer to repair Samsung, Sony and Panasonic over Vizio :-)but then I am just a tinkerer.
