I would replace the Hard Drive/ IR cable. The cable failing on the 17" model is unusual. The beeps usually indicates a RAM issue, try reseating it. This may also be an issue with the new drives speed. Is it backward compatible? Please give us the last four figures of your serial number so we know your exact machine.

UPDATE 10/26
Standard Hard Drive: 160 GB (5400 RPM) Int. HD Interface: Serial ATA (1.5 Gb/s)
Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.6 17" (SR) Specs
Identifiers: Mid/Late 2007, 2.4GHz* - BTO/CTO - MacBookPro3,1 - A1229 - 2137
Is the new drive backward compatible to 1.5 GB/s? If you don't know, please give us the make and model number of the new drive
