Some phone makers like to play it safe, and some, like Huawei like to bet it all. The P20 Pro is gambling on cameras. No face-reading hardware, no iris scanning, no headphone jack even, but there is an unprecedented 24-megapixel front-facing camera, and a three rear-facing cameras with even more megapixels. These cameras are mini marvels, they mechanically focus, and appear to have OIS hardware—even if the specs mostly talk about software processing.
Huawei is again using its in-house HiSilicon Kirin 970 with dedicated neural processing unit, seen in last year’s Mate 10 Pro. Ironically, the Pro misses out on the SD card expansion slot found in the P20 and P20 lite, so good luck fitting all your images on 128 GB, that’s all you’ve got. The reviews may be good so far, but these massive photos are going to take up an absurd amount of processing and storage space.

- The P20 Pro passed up on a lot in its quest for camera superiority, including wireless charging—that glass back is just there for looks, and future cracks.
- This three-eyed phone may look like a mutant, but it isn’t powered by plutonium runoff —a 15.28 Wh battery acts as a powerhouse and outweighs the Samsung Galaxy S9+ (13.48 Wh) and the iPhone X (10.35 Wh) by far.
- Like Huawei’s previous flagship, the P20 Pro is relatively easy to open—despite its IP67 rating. The glass front and back make for double the crackability, but once inside most of the components are fairly modular—earning the P20 Pro a 4 out of 10 on our repairability scale.
