Clean the back cover

Use the flat end of a spudger or your fingers to remove the old adhesive from the back cover.
Any remaining adhesive will prevent the cover from seating properly.
If you're having trouble removing the adhesive, apply a heated iOpener to soften the adhesive.
Applying isopropyl alcohol turns the adhesive into a messy residue and is not recommended for this step.
